I have not touched this item since Mar 31 - LOOK AGAIN. My grammar is perfect, even by Democrat-ic standards.

Maybe you looked at the first sentence where I said "filed papers as a Democrat" (CORRECT GRAMMAR) and MISSED THE IC in the last paragraph where I wrote "... in his Democratic opponent" (CORRECT AGAIN).

And just to prove I have not changed the entry and your eyesight or assumptions were to blame - here's the google cache from April 10.

I know that politically my idea has about a snowball's chance in, well, say an era of global warming.

But alas this single story has generated more positive PRIVATE feedback than anything I've written in 6 months (which isn't as much as I've written in other similar periods).

Notice I didn't say privatize without regulation - I think this is a great opportunity for a public-private partnership with some group. Like statewide highway rest areas - why are we managing those things across a hundred thousand square miles when local bidders could manage them (and we regulate them through the lease or contract tighter than we could through law anyway, holding them to high standards). With highways, it would be easy save for one part of federal law which must be amended and a gas station lobby (I propose not put gas outlets there, so that wouldn't change the gas retail market a bit - just small coffee-shop type manned service stations that would be safer and cleaner than our government could ever provide).

about Kwame Kilpatrick and his situation. Not that I condone it at all, but our administration in Washington has been lying to the American public for years. They have committed acts of treason that are punishable by death, yet there is no action taking place to put Bush, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld and Rove in jail, or all their henchmen.

The only one convicted was Scooter, and the Criminal in Chief commuted his sentence.

When will the American publica call for Bush and his henchmen to be prosecuted with the same fervor as they are now calling for Kwame's head?

Is it time for a letter to the editor?

I'd even put Granholm's name on it if she ponied up the annual expense. How bout the Stryker Zoological Park? Put your money where your mouth is, Jon.

And your idea about night operation. I went there at 430pm once - and left because they closed a half hour later (and the admission price would have been ridiculous - which should be phased down to a reasonable amount for later-in-the-day arrivals, which might increase afternoon attendance).

How about an old-style outdoor theatre in the lot that would play some kind of cultural movies and tie into the fabulous history that is Woodward, or even nature shows. You could come up with a thousand ways to use those lots during down times, even without permanent structures or businesses.

I'm not disagreeing a bit with what Chet's saying, I would just like to quickly give voice to those who are as critical of the marital infidelity as they are of the legal shannahanigans (while noting that only the legal offenses are technically enough to force someone from office)...

When a man and a woman exchange their wedding vows before family, friends and God almighty they're sorta making a serious commitment. They're making a promise. For life.

If one can't be trusted to keep that, the most solemn vow a man can ever be excpected to take, why should anyone ever trust that same man to keep his word on any political or professional promise? He's established, immediately, a track record of untrustworthiness and bailing on commitments when something "better" comes along.

To which my only all-ages appropriate response is "grrr."

Is anything not worth it?

The problem with taxes is they're never temporary. Regardless the millage taxes only seem to go a single direction: up.

The Zoo is a worthy cause, but it is only one of multiple worthy causes--any or all of them could end-up as a tax. What's to stop what something that augments its income with taxes to become dependent on them. Social welfare, corporate welfare, zoological welfare, arts welfare, etc.

Labor costs are often the highest expense for corporate entities. If the zoo can't control its labor costs how will it control its tax dependency?

As a separate millage I'm unsure if the tax is Headlee- or Proposal-A-limited.

Maybe the zoo should explore some other money-making opportunities.

Instead of being called "The Detroit Zoo" perhaps they could sell the naming right so it might become the DTE Zoological Park. Then the water tower could be repainted with the new sponsor's logo and even lit at night.

The zoo has lots of parking that's wasted at night when the zoo is closed. What if they tried the Disney option and included some adult entertainment (dining/drinking) establishments that could profitably extend the zoo's hours, generate licensing or leasing income, and even sell additional merchandise?

Personally, I really enjoyed Downtown Disney. I also think the zoo might be a great place for a convention center...
